JAW GA News | Special Investigative Audit | October 17, 2026
SOUTH GEORGIA — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s published county registry report lists a combined 1,682 registered sex offender entries across 16 selected Southern Georgia counties. The reported counts extend from Dougherty County and Lowndes County to smaller counties including Irwin and Clinch. JAW GA News compiled the figures county by county to establish a documented baseline for its next public-safety accountability audit.
Here is the distinction that cannot get lost: these counts represent all registrable sexual offenses included in the GBI county report. They are not a count exclusively of people convicted of offenses against children, not a count of new sexual assaults, and not evidence that every registrant currently poses the same risk. Nor should this selection of 16 counties be described as all of Southern Georgia.
The source PDF itself does not display a snapshot or effective date. JAW GA News accessed it October 17, 2026. Because the registry is updated continuously, these figures should be read as numbers listed in the accessed report, not a certified live count on that date.

Where the largest reported counts appear
Dougherty County, with its county seat in Albany, leads this 16-county selection at 279. Lowndes County, home to Valdosta, follows with 272. Together, these counties account for 551 entries, about 32.8% of the 16-county total.
Thomas (170), Colquitt (157) and Ware (121) complete the five counties with the largest raw counts in this specific selection. Those five account for 999 entries, roughly 59.4% of the selected total.
The original eight-county core of the JAW GA News review — Lowndes, Tift, Brooks, Cook, Berrien, Ben Hill, Lanier and Irwin — contains a combined 739 reported entries. The additional eight counties in the wider review account for 943.
A larger county count is not proof that a county has a higher rate of sexual offending, weaker law enforcement or greater danger to children. These are raw administrative counts, not population-adjusted rates, not incident statistics and not a measure of future behavior. Comparisons of per-capita rates would require population denominators, a consistent registry snapshot date and a careful look at what each count includes.
What a registry entry does, and does not, prove
Georgia’s Sex Offender Registry includes people who must register under O.C.G.A. § 42-1-12. The legal grounds for registration and the crimes of conviction vary. Not every registered offense involved a child, and a registrant’s inclusion is not proof of a new crime or violation of supervision conditions.
To determine how many of these entries relate specifically to offenses against minors, a different stage of the audit is necessary: verifying each relevant underlying offense, conviction jurisdiction, victim-age element where publicly documented, and the current registration status. JAW GA News has not completed that case-by-case verification, and we will not describe the full 1,682 as child sexual abuse offenders.
The GBI cautions that local agencies supply and update registry information and that its central database can change. The agency does not guarantee every entry’s accuracy. Residents looking for current information should consult the official GBI Sex Offender Registry, rather than treating a static county-total chart as a live individual lookup.
Who maintains and checks the information?
Under O.C.G.A. § 42-1-12, county sheriffs have responsibilities for maintaining and updating county registrant records. The GBI operates the central repository. According to the GBI’s registry FAQ, sheriffs are responsible for electronically updating information they receive from a registrant within two business days; the state registry is updated daily with record changes.
The next stage of our investigation will examine publicly releasable county-level compliance information: how registration is verified, how address changes are handled, how failures to register are investigated, how data are corrected, and what publicly documented safeguards exist where registered individuals seek positions involving access to children. We will not label anyone noncompliant, dangerous or in violation of residence restrictions without competent evidence and the governing legal facts.
What comes next in the JAW GA News audit
We will seek a consistent, dated registry data snapshot for these 16 counties; investigate which underlying convictions can be independently classified as offenses involving minors; compare official registration-compliance statistics where available; and seek responses from county officials to specific, document-supported questions. Any confirmed material errors or corrections will be clearly noted in updated coverage.
Our approach is not a neighborhood watch list or an invitation to confront private individuals. The public deserves accurate information, children deserve effective safeguards, and every person deserves reporting that gets the facts right. The purpose of this audit is to evaluate the records and the accountability systems behind them, not to sensationalize addresses or make accusations unsupported by evidence.

Editor’s note: Registry figures are from the linked GBI report accessed October 17, 2026. The report has no visible effective date. The 16 selected counties do not comprise all of Southern Georgia, and the 1,682 entries do not represent a count of convictions against children.
