Robert Sean Fitzgerald

A Career of Service, Training, and Dedication to Law Enforcement

JAW GA News | Officer Appreciation Spotlight

At JAW GA News, we spend a considerable amount of time investigating government agencies, examining public records, questioning public officials, and holding law enforcement accountable. However, there is another side of accountability that deserves just as much attention, and that is recognizing the men and women who dedicate their careers to public service.

Today, we are recognizing Robert Sean Fitzgerald, a veteran Georgia law enforcement officer whose professional records became the subject of an independent JAW GA News investigation.

What makes this recognition particularly important is how the investigation began.

Fitzgerald was originally brought to our attention through allegations involving his professional conduct and possible misuse of law enforcement resources. Rather than assume those allegations were true, we contacted the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council, commonly known as Georgia POST, and requested information about his certification, employment history, disciplinary actions, investigations, and professional training.

What we received deserved recognition.

A Professional Record Worth Examining

According to the Georgia POST information obtained during our investigation, Robert Sean Fitzgerald maintained active peace officer certification and was officially listed in good standing.

POST reported no disciplinary sanctions, certification suspensions, revocations, or investigations involving Fitzgerald. The agency also indicated that it had received no Brady-Giglio notifications or known complaints concerning the alleged misuse of restricted law enforcement databases and surveillance systems.

These findings concern POST’s records and knowledge at the time of our inquiry. They do not establish that no complaint could exist elsewhere.

Nevertheless, the information provided to JAW GA News did not substantiate the allegations we specifically presented to POST.

And when the documented findings support an officer, we believe those findings deserve to be reported just as publicly as any documented misconduct.

More Than 1,100 Hours of Professional Training

One of the most significant findings in Fitzgerald’s POST profile was his documented 1,158 hours of professional law enforcement training.

His training history covers numerous areas of law enforcement, including constitutional search and seizure, de-escalation, community policing, ethics and professionalism, domestic violence, human trafficking, sexual assault investigations, evidence preservation, criminal investigations, use of force, and First Amendment audits.

These are important areas of professional development, particularly when law enforcement officers are entrusted with protecting both public safety and the constitutional rights of the people they serve.

Training alone does not prove how an officer performs in every situation. However, documented professional development is an important part of understanding an officer’s career.

Years of Service Across Georgia

Fitzgerald’s documented career includes service with the Ocilla Police Department, where he previously served as Commander of the South Central Drug Task Force.

According to his POST employment history, Fitzgerald voluntarily resigned from the Ocilla Police Department on September 15, 2023.

On September 18, 2023, he began employment as an Investigator with the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

At the time of our original investigation, POST also listed Fitzgerald as a part-time peace officer with the Irwin County Sheriff’s Office.

His career reflects service across multiple law enforcement agencies and areas of responsibility.

Recognition From the Community

Following our original publication, several individuals publicly expressed their appreciation for Fitzgerald and his service.

Wyatt Garvin, who indicated that Fitzgerald had worked in Charlton County, described him as a “Great guy.”

Other community members expressed appreciation for the dedication, long hours, and risks associated with the work performed by Fitzgerald and his fellow officers.

These comments represent the personal opinions and experiences of those individuals, but they are also part of the public response to our reporting.

Why JAW GA News Is Recognizing Him

We have always maintained that wearing a badge does not place anyone above the law. An oath is a promise to uphold the Constitution, protect the public, and exercise authority responsibly.

However, we also believe that wearing a badge should not automatically make someone the subject of condemnation simply because allegations have been made.

Robert Sean Fitzgerald came to our attention through allegations. We investigated those allegations through available official records, and the findings we obtained did not support them.

We are recognizing Fitzgerald for his documented career service, extensive professional training, and the favorable certification standing reported by Georgia POST.

This recognition is not a declaration that any public official is beyond scrutiny. It is an acknowledgment of the evidence we obtained and a commitment to treating favorable findings with the same seriousness as unfavorable ones.

A Message From JAW GA News

Mr. Fitzgerald, JAW GA News would like to publicly acknowledge your years of service, your documented commitment to professional training, and the dedication associated with your law enforcement career.

Our responsibility as independent journalists is not to destroy reputations. It is to discover the facts and report them accurately.

Sometimes those facts expose misconduct.

Sometimes those facts correct misconceptions.

And sometimes those facts give us a reason to recognize someone whose service deserves public attention.

Today, that recognition belongs to Robert Sean Fitzgerald.

Thank you for your service.

The badge is not a crown. It is a responsibility.

People. Facts. Accountability.
